Jack Forbes Trophy
|
The Jack Forbes Trophy event was played in ideal conditions on Saturday - summer temperatures of 25+ degrees, gentle breezes and on true and fast greens.
Four games of 2-bowl triples over 5 ends each, including 2 bonus point ends, occupied 54 players on this Canterbury holiday weekend afternoon.
First played for in 1996 this Trophy honours the past contribution to Burnside of former life member and Club stalwart, Jack Forbes. Twelve former winners of the event were in the field but three new names will be engraved on the impressive trophy as the twenty first winning combination. Three teams won all four of their games while rather bizarrely there were no three winners but eight teams did win two games.
Results 1. Sandy Terrinoni, Murray Harper, Debbie Ho (skip) 4 wins/ 14 ends/30 points 2. Neville Churcher, Winnie Lui, Grant Ellis (skip) 4/14/26 3. Millie Knox, Ken Reid, Peter Doell (skip) 4/12/32 4. Alistair Salt, Rosemary Harper, Neil Cornelius (skip) 2/11/22

Another Wheelchair Ramp
|
Thank you Merv Rodgers for this new ramp suitable for wheelchair users to access our greens. This is the second new ramp Merv has financed recently. We are grateful for Merv’s support.
Snow Reardon and Brenda Turner were delighted to accept the new ramp on behalf of the Club and to see how stable and safe the ramp is. Made by MENZ Shed Rangiora, it weighs about 20Kg and it meets the World Bowls standard.

New Trolley
|
The new Mat & Jack Trolley was presented by Warwick Lynch on behalf of the Lynch family in memory of his father, Tim Lynch.
Tim made our first Mat and Jack Trolley several years ago and it has been in constant use. The new trolley will primarily be used on Orchard Green.
Tim is remembered for all his creative work and the helpful repairs he did for the club. He had a great sense of humour and was always happy to help out where he could. Thank you to the Lynch family from everyone at Burnside.

Club Championship
Good Neighbours Cup
Festival Bowls
|
A lot happened at Burnside today. Two rounds of the Women’s Club Championship Fours were completed; the first round of the Men’s Championship Fours was played in the morning; in the afternoon Burnside hosted Bowls Papanui in a match for the Good Neighbours Cup while a Festival Bowls format-competition occupied three rinks; and the dining room was a polling venue for the election - the last day of 13 days in this function.
Good Neighbours Cup 2020 - 32 Bowls Papanui players arrived at Burnside determined to reclaim this prestigious trophy. The match was played on eight rinks with each four playing two games, each of 10 ends or 1 hour twenty minutes whichever came first. One power play was available to each team per game. The afternoon was cool but the Orchard Green was relatively sheltered from the sharp breeze. Bowls Papanui got away to a flier and when the first series of games ended Burnside was trailing 2-5 in games won with one drawn. The difference in points was also decisive 59-94. This was a very deserved lead but............ The second set of games saw a reversal of fortune. Burnside’s mojo returned as the day turned into another very pleasant spring afternoon. This round went to Burnside seven games to one with points 110-54. Overall result; Burnside 9 games to Bowls Papanui’s six with one drawn; for those who like trivial pursuits 169 points to 148 points. Seven of Burnside’s sides scored at least one win while John Switalla (skip), George Nicoll, Les Fickling and Robyn Owens won both their games as did Neil Andersen (skip), Peter Bartosh, Evan Owens and Don McClelland. Eric Jarvis (skip), Clare Churcher, Tony Dell and Graham Tate achieved a win and a draw. Whatever the result everyone appeared to enjoy the afternoon’s bowls which was played in good spirit. We look forward to visiting Bowls Papanui on 27 February to play the 2021 version of the Good Neighbours Cup.
Meanwhile 18 Festival Bowlers enjoyed three games of two-bowl triples on the Laing Green. There were three 3–game winners with Nancy Field taking first place with 3 wins/ 12 ends/22 points from John Ross 3/11/26, Myra Diver 3/11/24 and Sharyn Pryde 2/12/27.
Grateful thanks to Philippa Johnston and Jan Harmon for the afternoon teas and savouries.

Hornburn Trophy
|
Teams playing Hornby on Saturday 26th September at 1:30pm Click here. People playing Festival Bowls can also check their names here. Reminder that all players should be wearing the new club shirt.
1. Hornburn Trophy - match between Burnside and Bowls Hornby On a fine Saturday afternoon 80 players occupied 10 rinks in this annual friendly encounter. The Trophy was decided with each four playing two games of 10 ends with a power play end called by the opposing skips in each game. After the first round Burnside had a narrow lead having won five games to Hornby’s four with one game drawn and a lead of 110 to 104 in points. The second set of games told a different story. Hornby dominated with superior play and when the dust settled and scores were tallied the visitors triumphed eight games to two in these games winning the points battle by a margin. Final result Bowls Hornby 12 wins/ 1 draw and 234 points defeated Burnside 7 wins/ 1 draw and 201 points. Bowls Hornby win and retain the Hornburn Trophy. Worthy of note for Burnside was the effort of Ross Bell’s team of Lou Dent, Murray Croy and Estelle Jarvis in winning both games. A fifth Burnside member also won two games, AJ van Hasselt, by filling a vacancy in Hornby’s ranks. AJ reckons he has been offered a contract by Bowls Hornby! This was as ever a very enjoyable afternoon of bowls which is traditionally played early in the season. We will look forward to playing at Hornby next year.............
2. Festival Bowls 60 members on 10 rinks played in the first Festival Bowls event of the season. Two-bowl triples was the game of the day with 3 games of 7 ends with 2 ends each game designated as bonus point ends. It was good to see many of our new players, both to the game or to the club, on the greens. In the end there had to be winners and losers but seven players did win all 3 of their games. John Ross won top prize of the day, closely followed by Sandy Terrinoni, Johnny Rowe, John Switalla, Joan Woodgate, Barry Woodgate, Jan Spang, Warwick Ainger and Beth Mehaffey.
The day was concluded with a bumper crowd in the lounge for the raffles, presentations and finger food - thanks to Philippa Johnston and her helpers as well as those who helped with green preparation, green marking and gear; registration and explaining formats; bar etc.
Next Saturday - the Burnside U26 Singles Tournament will be in its second day on two greens. One green will be available for up to 64 players - first 64 entries will be in! Please don’t enter if you are marking singles games in the afternoon.
