World Bowls
Championships

Our Burnside Bowls club member Bruce Wakefield has been selected to play in the World Disabled
Bowls which is being held in Wellington during the month of February 2015.
To assist Bruce to cover costs the Burnside Bowling Club is holding a fund raising event this coming
Friday 30th January at 5pm.
A recent news release indicated Bowls New Zealand were not contributing or supporting the running
or management of this major event.
It should be noted Bowls New Zealand are making a significant contribution to the Disabled World
Bowls Championships and are providing staff time and expertise to assist with the International
Bowls for the Disabled Organization.
This involvement has been ongoing since November 2013 and in January 2014 the IBD accepted
the conditions under which Bowls NZ would assist which included Trevor McCornish being operation
manager for the event.
It should also be understood Bowls NZ are not responsible for any financial commitment but will use
its best endeavours to support the organizing committee to raise funds.

The Annual Stu Buttar Invitational Open Pairs tournament will be held this coming weekend,
commencing with an Australia v New Zealand ‘friendly’ test match on Thursday evening at 4.30pm
at the Burnside Bowling Club at 330 Avonhead Road.
The first days’ sectional play commences at 8.30 on Friday and the second day starts at a similar
time on Saturday. Sundays post section play commences at 8am with the final(s) being on Sunday
afternoon.
Entry to the Burnside Greens will be free. Food and beverage will be available throughout each day
Top players from Australia and New Zealand are participating including the 2015 Women’s National
Pairs Champions Angela and Mandy Boyd from Burnside. There’s also Burnside’s favourite
‘daughter’ Tayla Bruce in the field and ever-popular World Champions Jo Edwards and Val Smith
will pair up for the tournament.
Australian stars include Lynsey Clark, and Claire Turley amongst their 8 women representation
and Dylan Fisher, Nathan Rice and Brett Wilkie among the 8 Australian men competing.
New Zealand Representative and Development bowlers in this year’s tournament include Tony
Grantham, Rob Ashton, Andrew Kelly, and former rep’ Andy Curtain. The inimitable Ken
Walker returns for another ‘crack’ and defending Champions from last year Dave Archer and Bob
McAuley will front in an attempt to defend their title.

So if Bowls is your sport, your hobby, your passion, or your interest there can be no better place in
New Zealand this weekend than the Burnside Bowling Club in 330 Avonhead Road.
Oh! One other thing...the TAB have been kind enough to install a "Tin Lady" (Self Serve terminal) in
our lounge for your added entertainment and with Sky and both Trackside Channels at your
disposal there will be plenty of action to keep you 'occupied'.
