Good Neighbours Cup
|
First played for in 1978 between neighbouring clubs, Burnside and Bowls Papanui, the 2019 contest for the Good Neighbours’ Cup will be the 30th recorded on the silverware. Seven mixed fours from each club met on the fast and true Papanui green under cloudy skies and in a tricky, fickle wind. Each four played two ten-end games and the Cup was awarded to the Club that won most games. After a very even start Burnside took a narrow lead into the second round and consolidated that lead to the finish. More importantly everyone enjoyed the afternoon and the hospitality of Bowls Papanui. We look forward to hosting the 2020 playing of this popular event at Burnside.
Festival Bowls Back at Burnside meanwhile, 24 players competed in a Festival Bowls event with a twist. Three seven-end two-bowl triples games were played with 3 points awarded for the shot bowl, two points for the second shot and one for the third i.e. six points were scored each end. Three three- winners emerged with Barry Woodgate with 73 points taking first place by one point from twelve year old Jayden Owens. Jayden in turn was one point in front of veteran Jack Trengove in third place. Other prize winners were Selwyn Manning and Sandy Terrinoni with Robyn Owens, Sharyn Pryde, Ken Ocock and Bob Curragh just missing out on a count back.

ElmBurn Shield
|
On Saturday under blue skies, Burnside competed against Elmwood Park for the sought after Elmburn Shield first played for 51 years ago in 1968. Each club fielded nine fours in a ten end x two games format incorporating power plays. Elmwood Park took a commanding 7-2 lead after the first round and despite a comeback by the home side in round 2, Elmwood Park held their form and bowled out deserved winners 12 games to 6 games. Not even a quick stoppage for afternoon tea slowed their momentum. Next year...............???? Two unbeaten teams provided Burnside’s highlights - Bill Kininmont, Nancy Field, John Switalla with skip Murray Harper; and Don McClelland, Jan Harmon, Cliff Johns and skip Peter Doell. There were many excellent shots played in this event with heads changing constantly. Everyone appeared to enjoy the match which was played in very good spirit. We look forward with anticipation to next year’s contest to be played at Elmwood Park.
A strong field of Festival Bowlers occupied 5 rinks playing 3 seven-end games of two- bowl triples also incorporating power plays. Last time this format was used there were no three winners. Today there were six! After ends won and points scored were added up Beryl Heperi was a runaway winner with 17 ends won from in order Alistair Salt, John de Freitas, Jack Trengrove, Lloyd Ewan and Evan Owens. Evan was playing in his first ever competition as was his wife Robyn and son Jayden - all three showed real promise for their future in bowls.
A feature of the afternoon was the collection for the victims of the terrible events last Friday. The money from the customary afternoon tea added to players’ generous donations meant that $630 will be donated to assist the Christchurch Muslim community in the names of the Burnside and Elmwood Park Bowling Club’s.
Finally thanks are due to Neil Andersen for organising the collection of donations, Tony Dell and Lloyd Ewan for their help in registering players, Brenda Turner for just turning up and doing all the catering cleanup work, Glen Miller for his meticulous preparation of our greens and Barry Bunting and his crew for dealing with 100 thirsty customers.

Fenburn Duster
|
Click here to view the teams for the Fenburn Duster to be held at 1:30 pm on Saturday 2nd March. Fenburn Duster Result
In ideal conditions on Saturday afternoon Burnside President, Philippa Johnston welcomed her Fendalton counterpart, Jack Gallagher, and his team to the 41st playing of the annual Fenburn Duster match between Fendalton and Burnside. Nine rinks accommodated the 72 players who played two ten-end games incorporating a power play for each team during each game. The Duster which in fact is a colourful embroidered pennant has over time been shared 20 wins each between the two clubs so the 2019 competition had some significance for bragging rights. After the first round Burnside held a narrow lead 5 games to 4. In the second round however and despite some very close games the Burnside teams consolidated their lead and now head the historic series 21 - 20. A very competitive and pleasant afternoon was capped off with afternoon tea thanks to Jan Harmon, Philippa Johnston and their team of helpers.
The two-bowl triples Festival Bowls event run alongside the Duster attracted a good field. For the first time in living history there was no three-winner. There were however eleven two winners! After much number crunching and attempted deciphering of cards Warren Baxter was declared the winner with John Phillips, Barry Woodgate and David Wilson taking the rest of the spoils on a count back from the unlucky seven.

Jack Forbes Trophy
|
A full green of 42 players in 14 triples teams competed for the Jack Forbes Trophy on Saturday afternoon. The forecast predicted 25 degree temperatures and building north west winds but luckily the temperatures remained pleasantly warm with light winds.
Two-bowl triples was the game of the day with four games, each of six ends, being played. The fast format resulted in tight heads with many excellent and telling bowls being played. There was only one four-game winner - Leo Crimmins (skip), Lou Dent and Brian Dilger who won 18/24 ends and scored 37 points. They were deserved winners of this trophy which was first played for in the 1996/1997 season. Runner up was the trio of Ken Reid (skip), Bill Kininmont and Rhonda Reid with three wins and a draw on a count back from Mike Murphy (skip), Neil Andersen and Lisa Mather. Doug Youl with Graham Tate and John de Freitas and Alan Bryce with Richard Mitchell and Gordon Morrison tied for fourth with three wins but no cigar.
Executive member, Alan Perry, presented the prizes to the winners in the lounge after play.
Meanwhile a “hen party” group assisted by Estelle and Eric Jarvis enjoyed a fun afternoon on the Orchard Green. A good time was had by all!

Hornburn Trophy
|
Hornburn Trophy v Bowls Hornby @ Burnside starts at 1-30 pm. Please be ready to play before the start time. Dress code is whites. Click here for Hornburn and Festival Bowls teams. View photos here.
For the third Saturday in a row Christchurch has experienced perfect weather for lawn bowls. Burnside was a hive of activity in that 120 players stepped on to the greens in the afternoon. The feature event was the annual friendly event between Bowls Hornby and Burnside where 40 players from each club competed for the Hornburn Trophy. This fixture was first played in 1986 and in that time Bowls Hornby have triumphed 11 times to Burnside's 15 wins. Today it was Burnside’s turn to prevail in perfect conditions both climatically and green-wise. The most important outcome however was that all 80 players enjoyed the afternoon’s play.
Sharing the second green with two rinks of the Hornburn clash were 40 Burnside players on seven rinks in a Festival Bowls contest. This consisted of three games – one of 3-bowl triples, and two of 2-bowl triples complete with power plays. The overall winners were 1. Peter Bartosh, 2. Jack Trengrove, 3. Bob Curragh, 4. Leonie Mitchell, 5. Rosemary Harper, 6. Beryl Heperi, 7. Cliff Johns, Lucky Loser Brian Dilger.
From next Friday to Sunday the prestigious Burnside Under 26 Singles Tournament takes centre stage.

New Season Trophy
|
The 2018-19 season opener was played under clear blue skies, in warm temperatures and in windless conditions. 81 players on 14 rinks enjoyed the speed of the true greens as they worked on removing their winter rust.
The three-game, two-bowl triples Festival Bowls format meant that during the afternoon each player played with eight other members and against nine others - a great way to meet and mix with club mates. Some excellent bowls were played and everyone would have had their own highlights even if it was scoring a chocolate biscuit at afternoon tea. It was a treat to see our two blind bowlers in action working in tandem with their respective directors as they prepare for the NZ Blind National Championships to be held at Burnside in November.
The trophy was decided by results taken over the two greens and was won by the overall best performed skip, second and lead. The winners may have not played together and indeed could have played on different greens.
Results: 1st Pam Clark (skip), Lou Dent (second), Brad Sinclair (lead); 2nd Leo Crimmins, Jan Harmon, Kay Smythe; 3rd Ian Warren, Terry Leadbetter, Ken Ocock; 4th Bill Lawton, David Conroy, Pauline Huggins.
The Hayman Trophy drawing competition will be played next Saturday, 22 September. This enjoyable feature event which every member is encouraged to enter is played in mufti in two groups. When entering please indicate your choice - morning, starting at 9.30 am or afternoon, starting at 1.30 pm or either if you don’t have a preference.
