Opening Day Trophy

Eighty four players stepped on to the Laing and Davie greens to contest the New Season Trophy on the first day of play of the 2023-24 Bowling Season. Players were drawn into 28 triples teams determined by a computer and AJ’s wizardry. Festival Bowls cards ensured that members played against nine others and played with eight others during the afternoon. The greens were a credit to green keeper, Jamey Ferris, while the north-west wind and the accompanying aircraft flyovers meant that one direction was extremely quick and the other was... well... not. Three games of six ends of two-bowl triples were played with the Trophy going to the best lead, best second and best skip.

Five players were in three winning teams. Results

Lead - Ryan Bonham 3 wins/13 ends/33 points

Second - Olivia Mancer 3/13/25

Skip - Rod Kearney 3/14/30.
Gordon Morrison 3/12/29 and Jamey Ferris 3/12/25 also won all their games. Six others were unbeaten finishing with 2 wins and one draw each Beryl Heperi, Mike Reynolds, Hamish Wilson, Mary Ellis, Kay Smythe and Tracy Wilkinson. Oh for a point! Thirty others won two games while everyone else enjoyed their good shots and got rid of some early season rust. Thanks to Jamey for his work on the greens and to AJ and Neil Andersen for their organising skills.

The Trophy event was the curtain raiser not only for the season but also the Club’s tribute to our 2023 World Bowls Singles Champion and multiple World Bowls medallist, Tayla Bruce. Organised by Jill Lee and her helpers this was an after-match function to remember - from the walk of honour, to the music, M.C. Hamish Wilson, excellent tribute speeches, AJ’s background photos, cake, flowers, Club presentation right through to Tayla’s lovely response this was a great way to kick off the 2023-2024 Bowling Season.
