COVID Vaccination Policy

We have been hearing much about the Traffic Light System which the Government plan to introduce very soon, perhaps within 2 weeks. I hope this text will explain what our Policy is about. The Executive considered the Government mandate, along with the mandates from Bowls NZ and Bowls Canterbury, thinking about how we can comply with and administer the new system, and what our policy should be to provide a safe community for our employees, members, and visitors.

The Executive agree that Burnside Bowling Club will become a mandatory vaccination certificate site from 3 December 2021.

Currently, the best protection against COVID-19 is vaccination.

Put simply, anyone who enters the Burnside Bowling Club premises will need to show evidence that:

  • They have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19 or
  • They have a vaccination exemption granted by the Ministry of Health.

Reason for this policy to be adopted:

  • We don’t want to be subject to limits on numbers of people and activities
  • We are concerned for the Health and Safety of all people on our premises
  • Non-vaccinated people may contract COVID-19

How will we action this policy?

  • We need to identify our vaccinated members to avoid asking you every time you enter the gate. From today, members may show evidence of their Vaccination Pass/Certificate, or their purple vaccination card to any member of the Executive so that their name can be registered and kept by our Secretary with privacy in mind.
  • Any member who is not yet vaccinated, should contact our Secretary, Jill Lee, or President, Brenda Turner, in the first instance to discuss concerns.
  • Visitors and spectators to the club will be asked to provide evidence of vaccination, this includes those involved in Corporate Bowls, groups, tradespeople, etc.

You may have questions, in which case as they arise, we will make a list so that the Executive can consider and respond. This is a new situation for us. We are all learning how to manage, just as other clubs, businesses, (and even the Government) are learning and adjusting to the new way of doing things.

Brenda Turner,

President, Burnside Bowling Club (Inc)..

Opening Day Trophy

Congratulations to Jan Harmon, Lou Dent and Lindsay Hodder (S)

Ken's Report

Two weeks after the programmed date, Club President Brenda Turner welcomed 82 members to the new season. Brief speeches from Brenda, Bowls Canterbury’s Lorraine McLeod and Club sponsor John Phillips were followed by the flag being raised and the long awaited words “I now declare the 2021-22 Season officially open - under Delta Level 2 Conditions. The sun appeared, together with a rather sharp early season wind, as 78 players eagerly dispersed to their respective rinks to meet their first team mates and opponents. During the afternoon three games of six ends of two-bowl triples were played including two bonus point ends in each game. Two and half hours later, the results were analysed and six winners of three games emerged. Lindsay Hodder (Skip), Lou Dent (Second) and Jan Harmon (Lead) were presented with the New Season Trophy. John Reese, Matt Small and Jamey Ferris also performed admirably in winning three games. Five others - Graham Tate, James O’Kane, Cheryl Gee, Margaret Gray and Tracy Wilkinson - were unbeaten but unfortunately for them, the dreaded D for Draw featured on their result cards, halting their progress to the podium. 24 players who won two games went home thinking if only ....... while over 30 others achieved at least one win giving most of the field something to write up in their memoirs. Hopefully future descendants will inquiringly ask “what does ‘Delta Level 2 Conditions’ mean?” Thanks to green keeper, Jamey Ferris, for preparing two excellent greens and Arjan van Hasselt for his technical and administration assistance. Even though a little different overall a good start to the new season.
