Busy time for Green keeper Jamey.

Mixed Pairs Championship

Congratulations to Jamey Ferris (s) and Lois Grey, winners of our club Mixed Pairs final, played this afternoon. They were the victors in a tight game against Mike Small (s) and Lyn Martin.

The final was a game of two halves. Jamey and Lois lead 12-0 before Mike and Lyn fought back for the game to be tied 16 all after 16 ends. An extra end had to be played to determine the winner. Lyn Martin drew the shot on the extra end and Jamey was forced to kill the end and replay it. Lois drew two shots on the following end and it was a nervous wait as Mike tried to draw the shot. In the end, Jamey and Lois held on for the win..

Jack Forbes Trophy

The Jack Forbes Trophy was played on Saturday, 30 April in warmish autumn conditions. Sixty six players were drawn into 22 triples teams and played 4 games, each of 5 ends. The pleasant overhead conditions, two true greens and the fast format resulted in an enjoyable afternoon of bowls for all. Most teams savoured at least one win but only one trio won all four games and the trophy. Six other teams achieved three victories. So close but so far! The day was capped off with a Happy Hour to thank all our volunteers and to celebrate the Club’s playing success in interclub competitions and Canterbury Finals’ Days.

Results

1. Brenda Turner, Richard Mitchell, Selwyn Manning (S) 4 wins-13 ends-35 points

2. Tony Dell, Gil Rowney, Lynne Brown (S) 3-16-23

3. Neville Churcher, Heather Patterson, Geoff Clarke (S) 3-13- 35

4. Ray Sefton, Clare Churcher, Don McClelland (S) 3-13-20

other 3 winners were:

Good Neighbours’ Cup 2022

The 33rd playing of the GNC resulted in Burnside narrowly regaining the trophy from Bowls Papanui. Sixteen Fours each played two games of 9 ends on the fast and true Davie Green in warm temperatures and a benign breeze on a late April day. The first round of games was won decisively by Bowls Papanui 5-2 with one game drawn. A sea change occurred in the second round and the tide turned dramatically in Burnside’s favour with the home side winning six games to the visitors two. The final result was 8½-7½ games to Burnside.

The only unbeaten Fours on the day were Burnside’s David Wilson, Allan Vernel, and Margaret Gray, skipped by George Nicoll and Ray Sefton, Judith Watson and Mike Murphy skipped by Murray Harper. Between them these two teams contributed half of Burnside’s wins. All 64 players contributed something memorable on the day and more importantly enjoyed the contest played in a very friendly spirit. We look forward to next year’s match at Bowls Papanui!

Meanwhile, 30 Burnside players participated in a Festival Bowls, 2-bowl triples tournament on the Laing Green. There were some lovely shots played in this event with many tight heads as a result. Results 1. Rosemary Harper 2. Lyn Martin (both with 3 wins) 3-6. Neville Churcher, Sandy Terrinoni, Catherine Sun and Pierre Alexandre all with 2 wins each, on a count back from six others. A feature of this event was that two current NZ Singles Champions were playing –Tayla Bruce and Tom Boyd – a first and a major plus for Festival Bowls!

Many thanks are due to Philippa Johnston, Jan Harmon and Rhonda Reid for the afternoon tea and after-match savouries and sandwiches, John Ross for managing Festival Bowls, Trevor Paterson for the raffles and to those members on the bar who dealt brilliantly with the rush at the end of play. Thanks also to the two Presidents, Bowls Papanui’s Ken Patterson and Burnside’s Brenda Turner for their support and assistance before and during the Good Neighbours’ Cup interclub friendly.

Mid Weekers Triples - Friday 29 April

  • Two bowls per player
  • Four ends per game
  • The skip will keep the score card
  • Start at 12.30 and end before 4.30 pm.
  • There will be finger food and a prize giving in the bar after.

With 6 wins from 7 games the winning team was:

Gordon Morrison (S), Paul McOscar and John Liddy

Congratulations to Burnsider Kevin Smith for being named Blind Sport NZ’s 2021 Volunteer of the Year.

Orchard Trophy

The Orchard Trophy or more correctly named Jubilee Trophy was contested between 16 triples teams on Easter Saturday, 16 April 2022. The silver salver was presented to the Club by Dr Geoff Orchard on the occasion of the 25th Jubilee of the Burnside Bowling Club. It was first played for in 1989. Ten former winners of the trophy stepped on to the Davie green to regain the right to savour a win, have their name engraved once more on the trophy and have the pleasure of polishing the tray for the 2023 winners’ photo.

First some background history.......Dr Geoff Orchard was Burnside’s first Vice-President 1963-66, second President 1966-67 and third Life Member 1969. He was the Men’s Club’s Patron 1985-98 and Patron of the amalgamated Club 1998-2003. Incidentally in the 1965-66 season he was the Men’s Singles Champion and was lead in the champion Four. In October 1979 Geoff officially opened our third green which was named in his honour.

Back to 2022 and Saturday...... the weather was a mixture but featured a strong North West wind which made one direction just out of the hand and a very wide draw and the return journey just as tricky into the wind with a mixture of skill and luck prevailing. The Davie Green was true and quick and gave everyone a chance to shine. The conditions of play were uncomplicated - four games each of five ends of two-bowl triples! Games were evenly contested and after 2 games there were only 3 two-winners. After 3 games only the Eric Jarvis skipped triple was unbeaten. Alec Weir’s team rose to the occasion and narrowly brought the Jarvis team back to earth and in doing so propelled themselves into second place. Meanwhile Mike Murphy’s trio having won only one end in the first game (they scored 5 points on that one end) won their next three games and with their 5 points in game one rose from the pack to take the winners’ spoils.

Results:

1st Beryl Heperi, Richard Mitchell, Mike Murphy (Skip) 3 Wins-12 Ends-23 Points

2nd Ken Stevens, Jill Lee, Alec Weir (Skip) 3-12-19

3rd= Derry Johnston, Margaret Gray, Debbie Ho (Skip) 3-11-19 (including a L-O-O) 3rd= Catherine Sun, Richard Bruce, Eric Jarvis (Skip) 3-11-19

Every team registered at least one positive and memorable result. The field enjoyed afternoon tea on the run and demolished 5 packets of biscuits to prove this fact. All in all a good afternoon of competitive and enjoyable Bowls!

Blindfold Bowling @ Burnside

Unsighted bowls? It’s obviously not easy and there’s no reason why it should be, but with a blindfold on you can get a sense of what is involved. Those who attended the blindfold bowls day left with hugely increased respect for Burnside’s two champions Tom and Deane and their directors, Gaye and Kevin. It’s not just direction and weight. Balance, navigating the bank and the seemingly simple matter of walking down the green are all way harder than you might imagine. Predictably bowls went everywhere (the importance of clarity from a director cannot be overstated) and equally predictably everyone went to the bar, as much as anything to celebrate the ‘miracle of Deane’. The smile on his face said it all. .
