Top Dog Cup

This was played on Monday 22nd April in a mix of sunny, overcast, with a patch of rainy conditions. Eight Triples Teams were drawn from entrants. The day was filled with good humour and hilarity, including Barney Rubble (alias R. Moody). Obviously a left over from his Nor West Sixes with his uniform.

To meet the planned finish time the second to last end was reduced to 2 bowls with the last end one bowl. This required the utmost concentration.

The final bowl of Team Three delivered by their skip happened to knock a team mates outside bowl onto the jack thereby securing a trophy win by one end.

Acknowledgment must be given to a number of sponsors that included Akaroa Dolphin Encounter, Robertson/Toomey Solicitors and Evolve IT Recruitment (Simon McOscar), The first two placegetters had the pick of the table and then team places by lot. The last prize to go which was a mystery envelope prize was taken by Helen Moody. To her surprize it was an Akaroa Dolphin Encounter trip for 2 value $220.00.

Thanks were given to Ray Sefton for his organisation and management of the day with backup assistance from Paul McOscar. AJ van Hasselt was also thanked for his work with the draw and assistance during the afternoon. He was presented with an orange beanie to add to his uniform collection. The Presentation was followed by an afternoon tea.

Jack Forbes Trophy

Winners were:

Best Skip - Lyn Martin

Best Second - Tony Dell

Best Lead - Merv Morris

From the pen of Ken Wilson-Pyne...54 members contested the 23 rd edition of this event. Ten of the field already had their names engraved on the attractive trophy which was first presented in 1996 in memory of former Life Member, Jack Forbes. At the end of the day Tony Dell joined John Reese as a two-time winner of the event.
The Festival Bowls format was used for the 4 games of five ends of 2-bowl triples. This meant that each player played with 8 others and played against 12. This format is a great mixer and some met club mates for the first time. The four games ensured winners would be found and only three players emerged with four wins each. Lyn Martin (Skip), Tony Dell (Second) and Merv Morris (Lead) who actually did not play with or against each other, received the JFT from Vice-President Hamish Wilson.
While afternoon tea was a highlight for many, Skips Kazumi Cuthbertson and Beryl Murphy, Seconds Beth Mehaffey and Gordon Watson, and Leads Catherine Sun and Merv Rodgers all achieved three wins and were in order, runner-up and third in their respective playing positions. Most had at least one win or a draw during the afternoon and more importantly seemed to enjoy the afternoon.
Many thanks are due to Jamey and Barry for preparing and marking two excellent greens and to AJ and Neil Andersen for their efforts and skills in running this event.
For those interested in history, or can’t remember if they have ever won a trophy the web site has a record of all those who have won Club events as well as office holders etc. Go to www.burnsidebowlingclub.com click on the Menu symbol in the top right corner (i.e. the 3 bars) click on Who What and When and from the drop down list click on Honours Boards and then be amazed. It saves a lot of time reading engravings and Honours Boards in the Dining Room!

Hayman Trophy 2024

The 2023-24 Hayman Trophy was contested in typical autumn conditions variable winds, with warmish temperatures. The 53-strong field was drawn on to 14 rinks, mostly with 4 players on each, for the 56th playing of this prestigious trophy, which dates back to 1965.
The competition was played over 18 ends with each player delivering in turn, four bowls to a medium length jack, then four to a short length jack and then four to a long length jack – 72 bowls in total. Each bowl was measured and those within one foot of the jack scored 3 points, within two feet 2 points and within a yard one point. A yard stick (in keeping with the history of the trophy) was used to measure the distances from the jack. In total 3,816 bowls were delivered during the afternoon, scoring in all 2,242 points.

One former winner graced the field – Graeme Rees who won in 1995. Scoring was very respectable with 26 of the entrants scoring over 50 points with another 10 players in the 40s. The eventual winner, Hamish Wilson, achieved 109 points while runner up Dave Straker scored 81 points followed closely by Andy Cockroft, Matt Small, Lyn Haworth and Gordon Morrison – all in the 70s
The possible score on any single end is 12 points and this is extremely rare. Hamish scored 11 on the third end (long) and the only other double figure scorers were Neil Andersen and Kazumi Cuthbertson with 10 points on the 17 th (short) and 13 th (medium) ends respectively. These three also achieved a score of nine on a further end as did 6 others. Nineteen 8’s were scored in total with Lyn Haworth achieving three of these on successive ends.
Twenty-eight sevens, forty-six sixes and ninety-one fives were added to score cards from excellent heads. Everyone got well into double figures and had bowls to be proud of. The average score per player was 49.6 points. (Could be a useful fact if you are ever on a quiz show!) The format does give a great pointer as to where to concentrate future practice. Next season, like most others, it looks like long ends will either need to be practiced or avoided!
This trophy is usually won by the most consistent draw player – one who scores on every end, starts well and finishes strongly. This year Hamish Wilson, Dave Straker, Andy Cockroft, Graeme Rees and Mike Brereton scored on every end while six others scored on 17 ends. Ray Moody recorded the best score (8) on the first end while El Johnson finished with a flourish with 9 points on the 18 th end. There’s always next year..................!

Thursday Walking and Cards Group - End of Year Meal

Current and past members of the Thursday Walking Group – some of whom now play cards at the Club on a Thursday morning instead of walking – enjoyed meeting together for a Christmas lunch on Thursday December 14th .

Before the lunch, some enjoyed a walk around Burnside Park seeking answers to 33 searching questions curated by AJ and Neil Andersen with prizes awarded following a check of the answers over a cup of tea. Some questions were quite cryptic – e.g. What is the number plate on the yellow roller housed behind the cricket pavilion? – and others botanical in nature – e.g. What is the Latin name for the protected tree about 18 paces due east from the slide in the children’s playground?

Twelve met at one of the bowling Club sponsors, the Avonhead Tavern, for the lunch. The Tavern had decorated the table and supplied Christmas crackers along with the traditional paper hat and joke. We took turns at reading out the jokes while our meals were being prepared. Some were funnier than others! We all appreciated the hospitality extended by the Avonhead Tavern and encourage Club members to eat and drink at the Tavern as the opportunity arises.

It is great to feature a Walking Group photo which included AJ! Usually he is behind the camera and out-of-shot. For those that don’t know AJ, he is the guy in orange in the photo.

Walks on Thursday mornings, departing at 10am from the Club, will resume January 18, 2024. All Club members are welcome to join in. Contact Neil Andersen for information at 027 453 8501.

Wishing you all a very happy Christmas.
